The 2008-09 Coors Belfast Giants season will kick off on September 6th, 2008 at the Odyssey Arena against the Cardiff Devils. The Odyssey Arena have given the Giants 26 weekend dates out of a possible 29 home games to entertain the people of Belfast including 13 Saturday Nights! With every single Elite League team adding muscle and grit to their line-up there are no easy games this season for the Giants but being able to play all of their games at the Odyssey Arena will give them that home ice advantage that only the Belfast fans can give their team!
Besides the ever popular away Edinburgh Double Header on the weekend of December 20th and 21st, the Giants Fans can look forward to two more double headers on the road, traveling to Newcastle on September 20th and 21st and to Sheffield for a very special weekend of Knock-Out Cup Action in Ice Sheffield on the 25th and 26th of October.
The Giants have entered into this year's competition but because they are the 9th team in the Knock-Out Cup, they have to win their way into the 8 team knock out competition. Sheffield was selected as the team to host the Giants with the winner on the weekend proceeding to the Knock-Out Cup Draw.
General Manager Todd Kelman was pleased with the fixture list and particularly with the weekend dates.
"The Odyssey have been very helpful this year and have been able to accommodate us for all our 27 home games in the Elite League and our 2 Preliminary Challenge Cup Games. We have a few weekends at home with two games and a few on the road which makes for easier travel on the guys. We also really wanted to compete in all the competitions including the Knock-Out Cup. With Nottingham not taking part, we made it an odd number so I told the league we would win our way into the competition. It won't be easy, two games in Sheffield - but I'm sure we will bring alot of our fans with us."
"We have scheduled a home double header against Newcastle in late January and we are expecting alot of Vipers fans across for that weekend. We have a handful of weekends scheduled with two games at home which couldn't be helped because of availability but I think that it will make for some exciting weekends packed full of ice hockey. All in all, we have nearly every game on a weekend which is the best time to be at the Odyssey."
